![]() ![]() ![]() SI arranged for the wreckage of a destroyed Bird-of-Prey to be discovered and mistaken for the Vas Hatham, while it was actually conveyed to a covert shipyard and stripped to the spaceframe. It was equipped with much more efficient warp engines and disguised to look like surplus Peregrine class combat frigates (not to be confused with the 24th century light Attack Craft). The existing Peregrine class ships were demilitarised and sold surplus and freighters, as peace talks with the Klingon empire were beginning. This was seen by Clancellor Gorkon as a sign of good will.
"Intrigued by the planform of the Romulan Bird-of-Prey first encountered in 2266, a team at Starfleet R&D in the 2280s set about applying Romulan design principals to one of our own starships. Using a new-build Miranda class hull as a basis, and christened USS Peregrine in deference to its bird-of-prey design origins, the ship proved highly maneuverable at warp speeds thanks to the wide-span nacelle struts. After exhaustive testing, Peregrineclass combat frigate was declared a success and put into regular service. A few other ships of the class were constructed and fielded, but performance over the well-established Mirandas was not so much improved as to warrant a huge class build." Mwaenwhile, the newly christened SS Kowalski was listed as one of these ex-Peregrine class ships, even though it was only a third the size. It was visually identical and sported sensor masks which gave it the readings of the larger ship. The actual ship retained its Romulan RPL2 Plasma Weapon, a nasty surprise for any pirate foolish enough to take the bait, as well as having its two Type IV phasers upgraded to Type VIII's, the same as an Excelsior class's main weapons. As an added bit of icing on the cake, it also retains its cloaking device, allowing it to achieve a measure of stealthiness. |
