![]() Augmented personnel modules, drones and probes are among the many resources starships use to extend their reach beyond thei hull of the vessel. APMs are the ultimate in environmental suits—very small craft worn and operated by a single individual for a variety of tasks, from maintenance and inspection to the tasks which may need personal attention. Some APMs are armed and are used in times of conflict for reconaissance and combat tasks. Buoys are stationary, usually orbital, instrumental packages. Drones are small unmanned craft often used for remote scientific tasks where it is considered unsafe for manned vehicles; or as unmanned weapons platforms. (The Soliton Wave Rider drone for instance, was built using the hull of a System Defense Torpedo.) Probes are small, specialised remote sensor packages. Armed probes are referred to as torpedoes and consist of targetting sensors and an explosive payload. |
