- Speen was born in the Vulcan city of shi-Kahr. His parents were advocates of widened relations with other Federation worlds, and vocally opposed the various isolationist factions within Vulcan society. His parents were friends of Ambassador Sarek, and his wives Amanda Grayson and Perrin. This brought him at an early age to the attention of Spock and Saavik, and he became a protege of Saavik's.
At Saavik's urging, Speen joined Starfleet at age 18. He excelled in his studies at Starfleet Academy and spent his Cadet Cruise on the USS Hawking, a
research vessel. His first tour of duty was spent on the USS Magnificent, an Akira Class cruiser. Speen spent two months on Dyson Base, but was specifically requested by Captain Sanderson to return to the Maggie as a full Lieutenant. In the wake of the attack on Dyson Base, she reluctantly allowed Speen to return to Dyson Base.

- Speen is tall and slender, with glossy black hair, upswept eyebrows and the typical pointed Vulcan ears. As with all Vulcans, he is calm, soft-spoken and reserved. Unlike many, however, he does not find Humans and other emotional beings annoying, but rather is highly curious about their emotional lives, although he has no personal desire to be like them. He believes that even as logic is the way of Vulcan, other races have their own ways, conforming to the principle if IDIC - Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination, and for them to behave otherwise is to deny their uniqueness.
Speen is as curious as a cat, often allowing his curiosity to get the upper hand over caution. He is eternally amazed at the wonders of the universe.

- Speen is named after a character inHyperhelion, a short film for which I did models, sets and props. Calvin Clime, the director of the film, played Speen for a short time.
